Strength-based Approach with Children and Families

Strength-based Approach with Children and Families (6 clock hours)

Description of Program:
The traditional delivery of services has been based on the skills and attributes that children and families are lacking. It is often the task of the practitioner to find out what is wrong with the family or child and determine how best to “fix” it. A significant change from this traditional model, the strengths-based approach values the active participation of the family and child in identifying and building upon their strengths. This empowering approach shifts workers from having power over to sharing power with children and families. In this six-hour training session, participants will:
  • Discuss the assumptions driving the deficit approach and the key principles underlying the strengths-based approach;
  • Learn ‘best practice: strategies and techniques to identify and build upon the strengths of families and children; and
  • Develop their personal style for infusing a strengths-based approach into their day-to day practice.
