Culturally Competent Practice (8 clock hours)
Description:
We live and work in an increasingly diverse community. This diversity challenges workers to be aware of, sensitive to, and respectful of a child or family’s culture.
In this 8-hour session, participants will:
- Learn what cultural competence is and how it applies to working with children and families
- Explore the role and value of culture in our society
- Discuss barriers to cultural competence
- Use a process for finding common ground and for building trust, appreciation, and understanding in a culturally diverse setting.
- Understand the historical and current challenges facing new Americans and people of color
- Reflect on the role of culture in their personal and professional lives
- Identify strategies for implementing culturally competent practice individually and organizationally.
